How I Discovered The Secret of Sustainable, Healing Fat Loss

Hey, my name is Terrell.  Growing up, I was always the chubby kid and most of the meals we ate were fast food. Pop Tarts, Flamin Hot Cheetos, and Watermelon Arizonas were my go to snacks, and by the time I was 18, I was over 200 lbs.


 At 5’7 and with no muscle, that put me somewhere between a chubby kid and a melted candle. I also began to get sick more often. Colds were a nightmare. Ear infections galore, rounds of antibiotics, “lactose intolerance,” you name it. 


I saw plenty of people that were muscular and fit and I thought it was awesome, but it never seemed achievable. Not for me, anyway. The way I ate and lived was the only way I had ever known, so might as well stick with it. So, the weight kept piling on. Sound familiar yet?


Fast forward a couple years, I served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Philippines for two years. At the beginning of those two years, I SNAPPED one day and decided enough was enough. 


I was sick of being a fat, negative, unmotivated loser. For just a moment, I looked in the mirror and saw myself exactly as I was - and I hated it. 

That day, I got all the Insanity workout videos from a friend and proceeded to do them every morning for an hour for the next 9 months. I lost 40 lbs, gained some muscle (and some confidence), and thus began my journey into health. This was 2014. 


For me, as it is for many, it started smoothly: you decide to change, you exercise a lot more, then you lose some pounds and feel good. But then, once you’ve lost the weight, you become so terrified of gaining it back that you’ll do just about anything to keep that from happening. 


I got home from my mission, started college (got a music degree) and this unhealthy fear of gaining the weight back followed me around like a shadow. If you’ve ever lost a lot of weight in a short amount of time, then I’m sure you can relate. 


In the next 3 years, I developed: 

And of course, I stayed skinny fat. 

All that working out, and I still didn’t have the body I wanted. 

Looking back, it’s clear to see why. 

… And a hundred other reasons. Of course, hindsight is 20/20 and I now know what I did wrong from MAKING mistakes, and experiencing it over time.  Obviously, this is not the only way - there is a “fast track.”

Anyway, back to the story.

Over time, I slowly learned and adjusted accordingly.

 I learned to eat higher quality foods. 

I learned to avoid inflammatory foods.

 I learned how absolutely essential sleep is. 

I learned that more weightlifting is not always better, and how to design a program that WORKS. 

I learned the proper relationship between STRESS and recovery. 

Most of all, I learned how to make all of this second nature. To ingrain it so deeply into who I was that I didn’t have to think and stress about it all day long, it just came naturally.


From those years of experience and hundreds of hours of personal study, my experience as a personal trainer, and my studies to be a Nutritional Therapist, I pieced together a system that simplifies and distills all of the principles that have become so central to my life and my health. 


Over time, I broke it down into these down into three pillars that GUIDE every decision about my health that I make:


Stress: internal and external factors that contribute to stress, the effect it has on digestion, sleep and overall wellness, and how to mitigate these stressors.

In picture 1, I was 18. I had no idea how to eat, sleep, lift weights, get and stay healthy, and the idea of it seemed eternally overwhelming. It was “the way I was.”

In picture 2, I was 24. I had lost a lot of weight, and even learned how to stop being skinny fat and put on more muscle than I’d had before because I upped my protein. But I also had: 

❌ SIBO

❌ Extreme acid reflux, so bad that I blistered my vocal fold and I lost my voice for a year

❌ Constant constipation

❌ Constant gas

❌ Bad moods and low energy

❌ Underate by a LOT

❌ Was afraid to really eat to gain muscle without getting fat again
